The Control Group of Chowan County, made up of local leaders and elected officials, meets in advance of storms to make plans, share information with the public, open shelters, and coordinate disaster response efforts. 

Visit NC FIMAN for a flooding and storm surge map that can be adjusted based on projected storm surge, but you must select the gauge at the waterfront and then select "scenario" to simulate floodwaters. 

Keep in mind that NC FIMAN does not simulate added rainfall or freshwater flooding, this is just storm surge or coastal flooding.

Evacuation Zones

Visit NCDPS's evacuation zone map and input your address to find out what zone you are in for evacuation orders. 

Zone A (evacuate first): 

  • Areas south of West Queen Street (U.S. 17 Business) 
  • Areas south of East Church Street (N.C. 32) 
  • Areas west AND south of Soundside Road (N.C. 94) 
  • Areas south of Indian Trail Road
  • Drummond's Point area 

Zone B: 

  • Areas within half a mile to a mile of the Chowan River (from the Gates County line south to the Chowan River Bridge) along the west side of the county, excluding areas of Zone A which take priority. 

Zone C: 

  • Areas north of West Queen Street 
  • Areas north of East Church Street 
  • Areas north of Soundside Road 
  • Areas north of Indian Trail Road 
  • Most interior areas of Chowan County 
  • Excluding areas of Zones A and B which take priority.
